Effective English Teaching

Current Project Status: Phase 1 complete; Phase 2 to be completed in 2009

Concept: The Effective English Teaching (EET) program will build English teaching skills and confidence among rural primary school teachers in Sri Lanka by introducing teachers to innovative teaching techniques and resource materials, and empowering them to establish English resource centers in their communities.  This initiative is a collaborative effort between public and private sector educational organizations in Sri Lanka.  Visions, Youth League for Sanatana Dharmic Perception (YLSDP), the National Institute of Education (NIE) and the British Council are all invested in implementing this project.

Goal: EET is being carried in two phases starting with a Research & Development component followed by implementation of the training program.  Stage one, which was completed between July and November 2007, involved bringing together a panel of English teaching experts and curriculum designers to develop a training module consisting of four weeks (120 hours) of English language teacher training.  A needs assessment to determine basic capacities of the target teachers was the starting point for designing the curriculum.

Stage two of EET will be implemented in 2009 for teachers from the Ampara District in Eastern Sri Lanka.  An initial training in Basic English skills will be held for 63 teachers from 21 government schools in one zone.  Following this initial interaction, the top 30 teachers will be selected and brought to Colombo every three to four months to undergo 3 one-week training sessions.  Monitoring and support for teachers following each training session shall occur on a monthly basis. Expansion of the program to several more districts across Sri Lanka is envisioned for the future.
