Featured Project: Kalagam Visions Learning Centre (Colombo)

Working in partnership with Saiva Mangaiyar Kalagam, a Sri Lanka-based nonprofit, construction and development of the KVLC will begin in early 2008. This multistoried learning center will house a Visions office, ample space for student groups and activities (including aesthetics) from the adjacent school (Saiva Mangaiyar Vidyalayam), halls for special trainings and English, a computer lab, a multimedia room, and a Montessori nursery. Over 400 refugee children from the Northeast will benefit from this project, as well as countless other disadvantaged and deserving youth and teachers!

Visions Global Health Education Program

Current Project Status: In the research & development phase; will begin implementation in 2009

Goal: This program is an effort to expand the current scope of Visions into the field of Public Health education. Our interactions with the children during the Leadership Camps brought to light the various inconveniences and obstacles they face on a day-to-day basis. Health issues such as nutrition, hygiene and water sanitation soon became a major concern. It was observed that simple routines such as washing their hands after using the restroom or prior to eating meals, brushing their teeth, and cleaning their clothes are not habitual. Lice are also a frequent issue, especially among the girls. A large segment of the children in the orphanages are malnourished due to poor insight to necessary nutrition.

Concept: The first step being taken to launch this program is the incorporation of general hygiene and sanitary awareness into the curriculum for the youth of Visions Leadership Camps. Throughout the year, research will be done on the major public health issues and disparities affecting disadvantaged youth. Our main goal is to get the message of healthcare importance across to the underdeveloped community EFFECTIVELY. This will be done by the creation of educational visuals and informational posters that will be distributed throughout schools and orphanages for the sake of both the children and their care-takers. We are fortunate to have Dr. N. Sivarajah, of the World Health Organization, as well as Dr. R. Surenthikumaran, of the Jaffna Moolai Hospital, joining us in our efforts with this project.
