Featured Project: Kalagam Visions Learning Centre (Colombo)

Working in partnership with Saiva Mangaiyar Kalagam, a Sri Lanka-based nonprofit, construction and development of the KVLC will begin in early 2008. This multistoried learning center will house a Visions office, ample space for student groups and activities (including aesthetics) from the adjacent school (Saiva Mangaiyar Vidyalayam), halls for special trainings and English, a computer lab, a multimedia room, and a Montessori nursery. Over 400 refugee children from the Northeast will benefit from this project, as well as countless other disadvantaged and deserving youth and teachers!

Visions Professional Assistance Initiative

Project Status: On hold; this project is now being thoughtfully researched and will hopefully take shape in 2009

Location: Throughout Sri Lanka & Kenya

Goal: To compliment all other Visions efforts by providing youth with career assistance and professional training in order to help secure future employment and promote professional success, along with instilling a sense of commitment to one’s community.

Concept: In an effort to assist underprivileged students and other talented young people in areas in which Visions operates by forging partnerships with existing children’s homes (orphanages), this program will serve the professional and academic aspirations of these needy young people by providing them with the resources, training, opportunities, and support necessary to do so.

Program Objective 1: Provide selected youth at all children’s           homes that Visions partners with in this effort with access to           computers and the internet, computer and internet training,           qualified instructors, and other basic tools.

Program Objective 2: Help youth develop basic career skills.

Program Objective 3: Provide youth with individualized career           counseling.

Program Objective 4: Bridge the gap between academic life           and employment by linking youth with professional           opportunities.

Program Objective 5: Provide selected youth with Visions           scholarships to pursue personal academic or professional           ambitions.

Program Objective 6: Maintain and regularly update a special           Visions website with information on professional and academic           opportunities, other helpful professional and academic           resources, important news and events, and more.

Program Objective 7: This program requires maintaining and           regularly updating a Visions web database of opportunities and           helpful tools, instructing youth in how the use the computers and           website, providing all participating children’s home partners with           all necessary resources and holding periodic training sessions.
