Featured Project: Kalagam Visions Learning Centre (Colombo)

Working in partnership with Saiva Mangaiyar Kalagam, a Sri Lanka-based nonprofit, construction and development of the KVLC will begin in early 2008. This multistoried learning center will house a Visions office, ample space for student groups and activities (including aesthetics) from the adjacent school (Saiva Mangaiyar Vidyalayam), halls for special trainings and English, a computer lab, a multimedia room, and a Montessori nursery. Over 400 refugee children from the Northeast will benefit from this project, as well as countless other disadvantaged and deserving youth and teachers!

Visions Scholarship Program

Current Project Status: Re-launched in February 2009; ongoing

Goal: To create opportunities to make a difference in a young person’s life by providing competitive scholarships to destitute youth living in Children’s Homes or other impoverished areas in Sri Lanka and Kenya. These young people will be trained and encouraged to help rebuild societies that have been devastated by poverty, years of civil war, natural disasters (such as the 2004 tsunami), the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and much more.

Concept: In 2003 three highly qualified youth from Batticaloa were presented with the opportunity to attend a highly reputable dance school in Chennai, India that specializes in South Indian/Carnatic dance, music, and culture. They accepted, and through the generous donations of others and the hard work of Visions volunteer staff, the three found themselves studying dance in India on scholarship. Thus was the simple start of the Visions scholarship program. This year (2008) we will, after much anticipation, be developing and soon launching the newly revamped scholarship program. The implementation of an institutionalized scholarship program for outstanding students from the Visions Leadership camps and other qualified youth throughout the Northeast, will enable us to better assist those talented and capable youth who lack the resources to pursue further academic or career advancement.

The Visions Scholarship Program is designed to help compliment all other Visions efforts by providing youth with assistance in order to help secure employment and promote professional success. Youth between the ages of 14 and 24 are encouraged to apply for small scholarships to do something that not only interests them, but also serves their future academic or career goals. Ideas such as taking a computer training or English course, attending a special conference or training session, seeking assistance to help manage the costs of school or work-related travel, starting a small business, etc. are just a few of the MANY ideas youth might pursue.

First-time applicants must specify within this application what they intend to do with the money and how exactly it will be spent. Successful applicants may receive the full or partial amount they requested. All applicants, regardless of whether their application is approved or denied, will receive notification from Visions in a timely manner.
